Anger Management & Emotion Regulation

Are you quick to anger?

Do you overreact and then find yourself feeling guilty or embarrassed later?

Do you have a hard time moving on from something that has made you angry?

Do you cope with anger in unhealthy ways such as substance use or social withdrawal?

Emotion dysregulation can negatively interfere with one's ability to function in daily life, maintain healthy and satisfying relationships, and effectively cope with stress.

Regulating feelings

What is Emotion Dysregulation?

Emotion dysregulation refers to difficulties in managing or regulating one's emotional experience. This can manifest in various ways, including:

  • Experiencing intense or overwhelming feelings

  • Difficulty identifying and expressing feelings

  • Trouble tolerating distressing or uncomfortable emotion

  • Engaging in impulsive or unhealthy behaviours in order to alleviate uncomfortable feelings

  • Experiencing prolonged emotional distress

  • Frequent negative emotions such as anger

  • Difficulty noticing subtle differences between similar feelings such as frustration and anger

  • Limited emotional vocabulary

  • Narrow emotional experiences (i.e., only experiencing happiness or anger but having difficulty noticing feelings in between)

  • Intense feelings that are disproportionate to the context.

Emotion dysregulation is often a feature of other mental health conditions such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and trauma-related disorders.   Aspects of emotion dysregulation can also be linked to acute stressors such as work-related or financial stress, grief and loss, significant life changes, or medical conditions.
